Sharing
Activity Type: Art and Class Discussion
Duration: Several days, with a short discussion each day
Class Size: Whole class
Learning Objectives
- Understand the connection between sharing and caring.
- Recognize acts of sharing in pictures and in everyday life.
- Choose a sharing activity to practice at home or at school.
Materials Needed
- Three pictures from each student showing acts of sharing, from family photos, magazines, and similar sources.
- Colored sheets of paper for mounting, and a wall or board for the class mural.
- Certificates to hand out when the mural is complete (WorkSheet #2 below).
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Introduce sharing and caring (5 minutes). Say: The pictures we look at today will show us something important: sharing and caring go together. When we share, we show that we care.
- Bring in pictures and make collages. Say: Bring in three pictures that show someone sharing. Mount each set of three pictures on a separate colored sheet of paper to make a collage.
- Discuss four collages a day. Say: Each day we will look at four collages together and talk about the message in the pictures. What sharing do you see, and how does it show caring?
- Build the class mural. Say: After we have talked about them, we will put all the collages together into a class mural, or display them on the wall.
- Celebrate and follow up. Say: When our mural is complete, we will hand out certificates. Then choose a favorite sharing activity from the mural to practice at home or during school.
Discussion Questions
- What act of sharing do you see in this picture?
- How does sharing show that someone cares?
- Which sharing activity from our mural would you like to practice?
